The YOUTHIE -
Tamworth’s Youth Space is managed by the Tamworth Regional Council

THE HISTORY

The enhancement of the PCYC in Tamworth is the result of an intensive creative consultation and development process, which enabled the input of young people and artists into the design, and future programming and operations of the facility. Young people worked with artists and architects in the Pump Art Project, which involved an artist residency program in 3 project stages spanning a period of approximately 14 weeks from June 2000-October 2000. Through funding from the NSW Ministry for the Arts, the Australia Council for the Arts and PCYC NSW, artists were employed to work with young people and local artists developing skills and exploring issues of public space through a variety of art-forms.

Tamworth Regional Council and PCYC Working Together

Since late 1999, Tamworth Regional Council and PCYC have been working together to develop a proposal to co-locate Tamworth Regional Council’s Youth Program within the main building of the Tamworth PCYC. Both Tamworth Regional Council through its Youth Program and the PCYC work to provide services, programs and activities for young people. Both organizations recognized the opportunities to be gained by working together and sharing skills and resources. The refurbishment of the Tamworth PCYC to incorporate a new Youth Space provide an ideal opportunity for Council’s Youth Program and the PCYC to work together to address young people’s needs from an attractive, accessible and youth friendly facility.

As well as an extensive consultation process with young people through the Pump Art Project, PCYC and Tamworth Regional Council also participated in a visioning and planning process to inform the operational plan and partnership agreement between the two organisations. Both organizations share a vision for the new Youth Space, which will form the basis for co-operation and co-location and facilitate an evolving strong working partnership.

Tamworth Regional Council’s Youth Program aims:

To provide a safe, alcohol and drug free, place for all young people to socialize with their friends and participate in non-structured recreational activities.
To provide a range of recreational activities of interest to young people.
To provide information about, and referral to, agencies providing services to young people.
To seek and administer grant funding for extended programs and activities for young people.
To provide a means for Council to maintain contact and to consult with young people on issues of importance to them through youth forums, surveys and other means.
Provide an attractive and accessible space where young people want to go and where they can grow and develop in safety.
Provide opportunities for a broad range of structured and unstructured programs and activities.
Provide opportunities for young people to take an active role in the planning and operations.
Provide young people with access to information and services, which will enable them to make better life choices.
Have the support of the community and be a place where parents feel it is safe for their children to be.
Be based on collaboration and coordination and through effective and efficient management enable quality services and opportunities for young people in Tamworth.
Assist in the reduction and prevention of crime through diverting young people away from anti social behaviour and offending opportunities, which may bring them into conflict with the wider community.

Hey

Im in a band and heard that i should play at the youthie at some stage. How exactly does one go about that?

We have played a few times, most notably at Band Wagon at tamworth high eariler this year. Its just so hard to find somewhere to play around tamworth, when pub goers seem to be context with someone putting on a techno cd.
