Indigenous Youth Leadership Program! We are looking for Indigenous volunteers to participate in a six week community development project in Vanuatu.  You will team up with five other Indigenous volunteers as well as Indigenous Ni-Vanuatu youth to work with a rural community in their development towards a better future. The program offers you an invaluable opportunity to gain leadership skills, explore new personal boundaries, and make important contributions where it counts – all while having fun and experiencing things most people only dream about! If you identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, are aged between 21 and 30, are available to undertake a 7 week leadership, community development and cultural exchange project in Vanuatu, between 2nd December 2010 and 20th January 2011, are available for a phone interview between September 7th and 10th and are motivated to make a difference in the world. National Youth Week Poster Competition: The National Youth Week Poster Competition asks creative young people to design the artwork for National Youth Week 2011. The winning design will be used on a range of National Youth Week materials like posters, postcards, community service announcements and the National Youth Week website. The artwork will be used to promote events in every state and territory. There is also a cash prize for both the winner and runner up. The competition is open for young people aged 12-25 who are not already professional designers. All you need to do is design a creative poster that incorporates the words ‘Own It’ – the theme for National Youth Week 2011. Jimmy & The Mirrors Tour July 2010: Jimmy & The Mirrors’ blend of good-time rock-n-roll and indie-pop has seen them become Adelaide’s premiere party band. After releasing three EP’s since 2008 and supporting numerous touring artists, The Mirrors were selected as a ‘Hot Six Band for 2010’ by Adelaide’s leading street-press magazine Rip It Up, and were invited to play Fuse Festival’s Explode! showcase for industry and fans. Renowned for coupling great music with a keen sense of fun, The Mirrors consistently bring the party to every venue they fill. July 2010 sees the band embark on their first regional tour of Victoria and New South Wales after being awarded a Contemporary Music Touring Program grant from the Federal Government. The two week tour will showcase over ten shows throughout the two states, with over 4500 kilometres of bitumen passing under their tyres. “We’ve always wanted to take our music to rural and regional Australia,” says drummer Kaurna Cronin, “so we’re pretty pumped to hit the road.” Jimmy and the Mirrors will be performing at the Youthie, Tamworth Youth Centre on Thursday night the 15th July. Screen It Competition: Registrations are now open for Screen It, the national competition for school aged filmmakers run annually by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. This years’ theme The Environment: Who Cares? provides a valuable trigger for students and teachers to investigate environmental issues while learning filmmaking techniques along the way. This year registration is completely free and is accessible online. The competition is open to anyone enrolled in primary or secondary education and students can enter through their school or independently. Entries can be live-action films, computer games or animations, but must incorporate the theme. Guidelines and application details online: www.acmi.net.au/screenit.htm. Competition closing on the 17th September.

Consultation on the Australian Curriculum: If you are currently at secondary school, or have recently left school, we want to hear your views on the draft Australian Curriculum. Young people have an important role to play in the development of the draft Australian Curriculum and should be able to express their opinions on this important issue. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is overseeing the development process and is also responsible for the management of assessment and reporting at a national level. To date, ACARA has engaged in extensive consultations with the education community, including parents, teachers, principals and professional organisations, and will continue to draw upon the considerable curriculum expertise of the states and territories when developing the Australian Curriculum. The draft senior secondary Australian Curriculum (years 11–12) focusing on the four initial learning areas of English, mathematics, science and history was recently released for public consultation. For the first time, all Australians can provide feedback on the curriculum to be taught in our schools. As the Australian Curriculum will be affecting school students across Australia, input from current students as well as the wider youth sector (recent school leavers, youth industry workers, etc) will be invaluable to the consultation process for the Australian Curriculum.

Free Community Education Seminar: Free Community Education Seminar and night of live music. For parents teenagers and people who work with young people. Presented by the Black Dog Institute. The seminar will cover areas such as what is depression, how to spot early warning signs, understanding the risk factors, understanding the role of personality, how to build resilience and what to do. The seminar will be held at the Tamworth Capital Theatre on Thursday 26 August 2010 from 6.30pm - 8.30pm. Winners Are Grinners: Jarryd Knox beat Ben Taylor in the final of the Pool Competition at the Youthie on Saturday on the 12th June. Jarryd Knox continues his lead in the 2010 Youthie Pool Championship with 17 points, ahead of Jackson O’Brien with 13 points and Damien Berry in 3rd place with 8 points.

Saver Plus: The Benevolent Society is excited to announce the arrival of the Saver Plus financial education and matched savings program in Tamworth. Saver Plus assists people on lower incomes to strengthen their financial skills and save for educational expenses. Saver Plus includes financial education workshops and provides support and motivation for participants to save by matching their savings dollar for dollar (up to $500). More than 5000 people across Australia have already participated in this exciting savings program, which rewards participants with up to $500 in matched savings.  This money can be used to pay for educational items including computers, books, uniforms and school excursions. Saver Plus is an initiative of Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ, delivered in partnership with Berry Street, The Benevolent Society and The Smith Family and other local community agencies.  The program is funded by ANZ and the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, with ANZ providing matched savings for participants. Whichway Regional Music Development: The Whichway Regional Music Development Program is a 3-day workshop series for regional Indigenous artists looking to gain valuable skills and knowledge of the music industry. Participants will network and participate in workshops, seminars and panels with industry professionals, established artists and performers who will share first hand experiences and knowledge of the contemporary music industry. Day 1 will focus on industry skills providing an overview of how an emerging artist can approach the industry. Day 2 and 3 will focus on practical skills such as songwriting and performance. Workshops and panels will be led by industry professionals such Adriana Rios (Artist Manager), Ozi Battla (The Herd), Nardi Simpson (Stiff Gins), Joel Wenitong (The Last Kinection), Charlie Trindall and more. The workshops will be held in Tamworth from the 29th June to the 1st of July in partnership with the Tamworth Youth Centre. The program is free and there are limited places. Shift This 2010: Shift This 2010 is a festival of change, where young people are in the driver’s seat. The festival is for young people aged 12 - 18 who live in NSW and includes three days of interactive workshops, inspiring speakers, incredible performances, art displays, entertainment, awesome food, and oh so much more. Three days (well, OK, 2.5 days!) of food, fun and festivities, all for only $110 (GST free). Writing Competition: The John Marsden Prize for Young Australian Writers 2010 is now open for entries. $5500 total prize money and publication in Voiceworks and on the Express Media website. There are two age categories including under 18 and 18-25, and two submission categories including poetry and short story or first chapter of a novel. Entries close 5pm Friday 21st August 2010.
